The faster we go the more we need to listen

Hey Reader

AI is making us faster.

  • Faster answers.
    Faster analysis.
    Faster decisions.

Brilliant but there’s a danger hiding in all that speed.

We can get to an answer before we’ve properly understood the question.

That’s something I’ve noticed repeatedly in the work we’ve been doing around AI and leadership.

The temptation is to ask: What can AI do here?

I think leaders need another question alongside it: Who do I need to listen to before we decide?

The higher the ambiguity and the greater the impact on people, the more human judgement still matters. Recent work from MIT Sloan makes exactly that distinction: routine, low-risk decisions lend themselves far more readily to automation; strategic, ambiguous ones need strong human involvement.

So perhaps one of the most important AI skills isn’t prompting.

It’s pausing.

Before you accept the beautifully structured answer, recommendation or next step, ask:

  • What might we be missing?
  • Who sees this differently?
  • Who will live with the consequences?

Technology can help us move incredibly quickly.

Leadership is knowing when not to.

Big love to your brain.

Hey Reader Over the last couple of weeks, we’ve been on a bit of a productivity mission both here and on the podcast. First, we talked about intensity and why working harder, faster and with your hair permanently on fire isn’t the same as having impact. Then we talked about Peak & Flow, the fact that not every hour of you is worth the same and with an ever growing to do list how to spot where you can add the greatest value. This week, I want to take on another sacred cow of productivity. The...

Hey Reader Last week I wrote about how looking busy, feeling busy and operating at 97mph are not the same as having impact. So this week, I want to go one step further because even when we do make time for the work that matters, we often make a fairly ridiculous assumption: That every hour of us is worth the same. It isn’t. Before we dig in though one of our wonderful readers Sonia sent me an email and I wanted to share because we LOVE it when serendipity happens. She said she read it with a...

Hey Reader September has a very particular energy, doesn't it. The out of office is switched off, your inbox has pages of unread emails, and somewhere in the business someone has already said the words "final push for Q4." You can feel the temperature rising before you've even unpacked your bag. Before the pressure builds any further this is what I want you to recognise: Intensity and impact are not the same thing. In fact, the more intensity you carry into a room, the less impact you often...
